A 2.6-ton battery pack is hurtling toward Earth, detaching from the International Space Station in 2021 and theoretically landing in Germany on Friday after three years in orbit. They don’t know exactly where yet.

Three years ago, the International Space Station (ISS) dropped the platform, which has been hurtling through space ever since. According to NASA, the element array was supposed to orbit the Earth for a maximum of four years and then burn up in the atmosphere. Now, however, its return to the atmosphere is imminent.

As the relevant Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection announced on Thursday, the block will hit the Earth on Friday.

The object is a battery-powered platform that will detach from the International Space Station, ISS, on March 21, 2021. The total size of the object is 4×2×1.5 meters and its weight is 2600 kg

the ministry announced.

According to BILD, the battery block is expected to break into hundreds of pieces – some of them may still weigh several kilograms. It is not clear exactly where the fragments will end up, but according to calculations, a 35 kilometer wide corridor in Germany could be affected, somewhere between the Ruhr region and Cottbus.
