Sednaya Prison: A Night of unthinkable liberation
For years, Sednaya Military Prison in Syria represented a point of no return for many. Moast prisoners resigned themselves to a life within its walls, losing hope of ever seeing freedom again. Then, on December 8, 2024, the unimaginable occurred, shattering the despair that had permeated the prison for so long.
A sudden commotion erupted in the middle of the night. Prison staff began shouting, quickly followed by the distinctive whop-whop sound of a helicopter descending onto the roof. Gunshots rang out, accompanied by the jarring rattle of iron bars and fervent cries of “Allahu akbar,” – “God is great.”
Most prisoners, cut off from the outside world, were unaware of the rapid advances being made by rebel forces. Confusion and terror gripped the cells as the sounds of chaos escalated. One prisoner, seized at a checkpoint in 2019, believed a riot had broken out. He instinctively flattened himself on the floor, paralyzed by fear and unable to move. Others desperately sought refuge.
Another prisoner and his cellmates barricaded themselves in thier cell’s bathroom as men forcefully opened the wing door with rifle butts. When his cell door was finally breached, a liberating shout echoed: “Go, go wherever you want in Syria! You are free now!”
The moment of release was profoundly emotional. Mohammad and his brother Akram, finally able to reach each other, embraced tightly, Akram collapsing into his brother’s arms.
Many struggled to comprehend their newfound freedom. One former prisoner began running from the complex, convinced for miles that it was a cruel illusion and guards would reappear to drag him back to Sednaya.
another stumbled out of the prison, utterly overwhelmed by disbelief.”We couldn’t believe it, and we had no idea what to do,” he later recounted. “It was ecstasy beyond description.”
