Iran emphasized that it could change its nuclear doctrine if Tehran’s existence was threatened by Israel. This assertion further increases concerns about weapons Iranian nuclear.

“We have no decision to make a nuclear bomb, but if Iran’s existence is threatened, there is no choice but to change our military doctrine,” said the adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Kamal Kharrazi, in a statement, as reported Iran’s Student News Network and reported Thursday (9/5/2024).

In his statement, Kharrazi said Tehran had signaled that it had the potential to produce such weapons.

“In the event of an attack on our nuclear facilities by the Zionist regime, our deterrence will change,” he said.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is known to have banned the development of nuclear weapons in a fatwa issued in the early 2000s.

Khamenei reiterated his stance in a similar statement in 2019.

“Making and stockpiling nuclear bombs is wrong and using them is haram… Even though we have nuclear technology, Iran is doomed to avoid it,” Khamenei stated at the time.
