Iran Imprisons Nobel Winner Shirin Ebadi for Another 7 Years

Iran Imprisons Nobel Laureate narges Mohammadi for‌ Additional Years ‌Amidst ‍Hunger Strike

Geneva,Switzerland – Iranian authorities have added to teh already extensive prison sentance of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, further escalating concerns over‍ the human rights situation in Iran. The sentencing comes as Mohammadi continues a hunger strike‌ to protest‌ her detention and the broader suppression of dissent within the ⁢country.

Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her fight against ⁣the oppression of women in Iran, received an additional six years for charges of “gathering and collusion” and a further 18 months for‌ “propaganda activities,” according to her lawyer, ⁣Mostafa Nili, who⁣ reported the sentencing via social media platform X. A two-year travel ban was also imposed. Iranian⁢ law stipulates that sentences are served concurrently, though, the cumulative effect of these convictions brings Mohammadi’s total imprisonment to over 44 years.

The Narges Mohammadi Foundation has condemned the proceedings as a “sham trial,” ‍highlighting the lack of due‌ process and the politically motivated nature of the charges. Concerns are ⁢mounting over Mohammadi’s health, as she was briefly hospitalized earlier this week due to deteriorating physical condition resulting from her hunger ⁢strike before being returned to detention. Reports indicate that a phone call ‌with her lawyer ‍was⁢ abruptly terminated as she attempted to detail recent events surrounding her arrest.

Mohammadi’s decades-long activism has focused on advocating for human rights, particularly the ‍rights of women, and challenging the policies ‍of the Islamic Republic. She has spent significant periods in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, known for its harsh conditions and allegations of human rights abuses. Her arrest in december followed her attendance at a memorial service for human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, ⁣whose death occurred ⁢under disputed circumstances.

The international community has consistently called for Mohammadi’s release and for Iran to uphold its human rights obligations. ⁢The latest sentencing is expected to intensify these calls and further isolate Iran on the global stage. As of this report,Iranian authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the⁣ new sentencing.
