Irish horses Poised for Strong Showing at 2025 Breeders’ Cup
The 2025 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar promises a meaningful Irish presence, with a formidable lineup of horses and trainers aiming for glory. Several leading contenders have already arrived, generating considerable excitement amongst racing enthusiasts.This year’s event, taking place October 31st and November 1st, is shaping up to be a thrilling competition.
Key Contenders & Trainer Strategies
aidan O’Brien,a perennial powerhouse in international racing,is sending a strong team. Minnie Hauk, recently runner-up in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, will now target the Breeders’ Cup Turf instead of the Filly and Mare Turf. Coolmore partners will instead run Bedtime Story in the Filly and Mare Turf.
The Lion in Winter,previously considered a classic contender,will contest the Breeders’ Cup Mile. O’Brien shared a glimpse into preparations, noting the return of gates from home for familiar training conditions.
Joseph and Donnacha O’Brien, both successful in their own right, will also be actively involved.
* Joseph O’Brien will saddle Queen Of Hawaii in the Juvenile Fillies’ Turf and North Coast in the Juvenile Turf on Friday.
* Donnacha O’Brien brings Havana Anna (Juvenile Turf Sprint), Balantina (Juvenile Turf), and Atsila (Filly & Mare Turf) to California.
Additional Irish Representation
Beyond the O’Brien dynasty, several other Irish trainers are making the trip. Willie Mullins,renowned for his success in jumps racing,will enter Ethical Diamond in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. This horse arrives with a strong pedigree, having triumphed at Royal Ascot and the Ebor.
Adrian Murray is set to participate in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint with Arizona Blaze and Bucanero Fuerte, both carrying the Amo racing silks. Jack Davison will also be represented in the same sprint contest with She’s Quality.
Valiant Force, trained by Adrian Murray, is currently listed as the first reserve for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and the team is hoping for a late withdrawal to secure a spot.
