Dublin Man Organizes Second Gaza Flotilla, Aiming for Larger Scale and Direct delivery of Aid
Dublin resident Colm Byrne is spearheading teh institution of a second Gaza Flotilla, with the goal of delivering humanitarian aid and raising awareness of the situation in Palestine. This year’s flotilla is planned to be significantly larger than the previous effort, with an anticipated 100 boats compared to the 44 that participated last year.RTÉ News reported on the preparations.

Unlike the previous flotilla, which did not attempt to land due to safety concerns, this year’s mission aims to reach the shores of Gaza. Byrne explained to RTÉ’s This Week program that the intention is to make land and deliver aid directly. Byrne has spent the last three weeks in Spain preparing for the flotilla, focusing on acquiring and equipping vessels. The entire operation is funded through public fundraising efforts. He stated, “Currently we are buying boats and getting them ready,” emphasizing the reliance on donations to make the mission possible.

He claimed that 1.6 billion people, approximately 20% of the world’s population, followed the flotilla’s progress at some point. This widespread interest, he believes, demonstrates a global desire for a just resolution to the Palestinian situation and a growing perception that governments are failing to adequately address the crisis.

Byrne underscored the urgency of the mission,citing the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He noted that 500 people have been killed as the ceasefire, with countless more injured and requiring amputations.”We can’t leave this. The Palestinian people deserve it,” he stated,expressing a firm commitment to continuing the effort until Palestinians are “treated correctly,until they’re treated with respect.”
Experiences from the Previous Flotilla
Byrne recounted his experience on the previous flotilla, describing how their vessel was boarded by Israeli commandos in international waters. While he stated the commandos treated them “all right” during the boarding, he reported harsh treatment upon arrival on shore. He detailed being subjected to hours of degrading treatment, including being handcuffed and verbally abused by Israeli police.
