The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has just launched its “Love Life” campaign which focuses on tests to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis or chlamydia. Problem: a screening can cost up to 300 francs, a price far too high for many young people.

“The condom remains important, but it is no longer the only way to protect yourself,” declared Anne Lévy, director of the OFSP in 7:30 p.m. on the occasion of the launch of the “Love Life” campaign.

This year, the emphasis is on “self-check” to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis or chlamydia.

Up to 300 francs

The catch is that people without symptoms usually have to pay for the tests themselves. And their cost varies between 100 to 300 francs depending on the canton and the analysis laboratory, an amount which discourages many young people.

Asked about the question of free access, the Federal Office of Public Health responds that it financially supports advice and screening in specialized centers. “In Zurich, the city is currently offering young people free advice and testing,” notes the OFSP, which says it is following this pilot project with interest.

The price should not be a barrier, insists Léonie Chinet, director of PROFA, the foundation for the promotion of sexual health in Switzerland.

“In the sexual health centers which are mentioned on the site Lovelife.ch(…) there is the possibility of adapting prices or even granting free admission, particularly for young people”, she recalls.
