The Polisario is concerned about the strengthening of the Moroccan military presence in the Sahara, particularly in Aousserd, Mahbes and Gueltat Zemmour. According to Front sources cited by a Sahrawi media, this deployment undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

Military formations including Abrams tanks, self-propelled howitzers and armored rapid intervention vehicles were deployed to Aousserd. The Polisario warns of a possible “invasion of liberated territories” east of the Wall of Sands. The leader of the Polisario, Brahim Ghali, already mentioned this threat on January 14.

Prevent an escalation of violence

The Polisario declared “war” on Morocco in December 2020 in response to the intervention of the Royal Armed Forces to restore traffic at the El Guerguerate crossing. After more than three years of conflict, the Polisario has not won any victories on the ground and has lost control of its “liberated territories”. Thousands of Sahrawis have fled to the Tindouf camps in Algeria, according to a Sahrawi Red Crescent report from November 2023.

The Polisario fears that the invasion of the Royal Armed Forces will aim to force it to abandon its demands for independence. The Front calls on the international community to intervene to prevent an escalation of violence in the region. The situation in the Sahara is tense and the risk of a resumption of hostilities is real. The international community is expected to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict.
