‘The epidemic of the century:’ organized in Ankara, hosted by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) and Lokman Hekim University. ObesityParticipating in the symposium titled ‘Prof. Dr. İlhan Satman said that obesity is the disease of the age. Prof. Dr. Satman stated that many people and organizations insist on not seeing obesity as a disease and said, “Not only is it a disease itself, but it causes many diseases; especially non-communicable diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood lipids, even cancers cause many movement disorders.” “Situations that affect our mental health are among the leading diseases,” he said.

THERE ARE 800 MILLION WITH OBESITY WORLDWIDE

Prof. Dr. İlhan Satman said that obesity has now reached hidden pandemic proportions and emphasized that health organizations explain this situation with atlases. Prof. Dr. Satman said, “We were actually used to seeing diabetes figures with atlases. Since we have seen that obesity has increased in almost all societies in the last few years, to the extent of a hidden pandemic, organizations, especially the World Obesity Federation, had to publish such atlases. Here is the 2024 atlas that has just been published. To give the figures here; We use the body-mass index as the measure of obesity and simply divide the body weight in kilograms by the square meter of our height. We prefer the number we get to be under 25. If it is between 25 and 29.9, if it does not exceed 30, we are talking about obesity. If the number is 35 and above, we are talking about serious obesity, and when it is above 40, we are talking about life-threatening obesity. In the latest obesity atlas, it is mentioned that 0.8 billion people worldwide are obese as of 2020, and the number of individuals with obesity will be over 0.8 billion by 2035. It shows that it will exceed 5 billion. “Similarly, studies say that the population that we see as a candidate for being overweight, that is, obese, is now around 1.4 billion, and according to predictions made until 2035, this number will be approximately 1.8 billion.”

REFLECTIONS OF OBESITY

Explaining the reflections of obesity, Prof. Dr. Satman said, “People with obesity have a high risk of contracting some diseases because their body mass index is high and they are overweight. Diabetes is the most important of these. Another one is high blood pressure and cancers, strokes, that is, conditions that cause paralysis. Both the probability of getting these is high, The risk of developing complications of these diseases is high, and as a result, deaths and years spent with disability have increased, but these are the periods spent with disability. Therefore, scientific authorities now take these into account as a separate criterion as years of life spent with disability. “We see that these are actually increasing rapidly along with overweight and obesity,” he said.

‘AS THE LEVEL OF WELFARE INCREASES, OBESITY INCREASES’

Prof. stated that as social and cultural development increases in the world, obesity also increases. Dr. Satman said, “As the level of welfare increases, we see that obesity increases. The World Bank’s income groups also show this, obesity is relatively lower and overweight is lower in low-income countries. But if you consider the expectations from 2020 to 2035, the acceleration will be high.” “However, when we look at developed countries with high socio-economic and high income levels, we see that the rate of increase has slowed down due to reasons such as increased awareness.”

‘THERE IS A STABILITY IN THE INCREASE RATE IN CHILDREN’

Prof. Dr. Satman stated that obesity is increasing in the childhood age group in Turkey; Emphasizing the need to focus on preventive studies, he said, “When we look at the studies conducted with children aged 7-8 in Turkey, we see that obesity is increasing in the childhood group, but only in recent years, the acceleration seems to have decreased. Obesity has not decreased, but there seems to be a stabilization in the rate of increase. This is also the case in Turkey.” This is also the case in the population and health studies conducted by the Statistical Institute. Research in recent years shows that obesity is heading towards stabilization, not to say decreasing. This indicates that we need to focus on awareness and preventive studies, as stated in the Turkey Diabetes Obesity and Hypertension Epidemiology Study we conducted in 1998. “We see that obesity, which is around 22 percent in society, has risen to over 30 percent today and reached around 31 percent, and projections show that these figures will increase to around 45-50 percent by 2045,” he said.
