Italy Increases Tourist Taxes in Milan & Venice: What Travelers need to Know
Planning a trip to Italy? Be aware of upcoming changes to tourist taxes in two of its most popular destinations: Milan and Venice. These adjustments are designed to help fund infrastructure and services, particularly in anticipation of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know to budget effectively for your Italian adventure.
Milan: Higher Accommodation Taxes on the Horizon
Milan is significantly increasing its city tax, also known as a “stay tax,” for visitors. These changes will impact your accommodation costs if you’re staying within 30 kilometers of the Olympic venues in Lombardy and Veneto.
Here’s how the new rates will break down:
* five-star hotels: €7.40 per night.
* Four-star hotels: €5.00 per night.
* Three-star & Two-star hotels: €4.00 per night.
* One-star hotels: €4.00 per night.
* Short-term rentals & B&Bs: €9.50 per night.
* Holiday homes: €7.00 per night.
* Hostels & Campsites: €3.00 per night.
These increases were announced late last year, following government approval allowing municipalities hosting Olympic events to raise taxes. This ensures adequate funding for necessary improvements and services during the games and beyond.
Venice: Expanding day-Tripper Fees
Venice is continuing to refine its system for managing tourist influx, particularly day visitors. For the second year in a row,the number of days the tourist fee will be in effect is increasing.
Here’s the timeline:
* 2024: 29 days with a fee.
* 2025: 54 days with a fee.
* 2026: 60 days with a fee.
This means you’ll need to factor in a €5 entry fee if you’re planning a day trip to Venice during peak season. The fee applies to visitors aged 14 and up entering the centro storico (historic centre) between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm on designated days.
Specifically, the fee will be in effect from april 3rd to July 26th in 2026.it’s a proactive measure to help manage overcrowding and preserve the unique character of this iconic city.
What Does This Mean for You?
As you plan your Italian getaway, remember to include these potential costs in your budget. These taxes contribute directly to the upkeep and advancement of the cities you’re visiting, ensuring a better experience for everyone.
Staying informed about these changes will help you avoid surprises and enjoy a seamless trip. Consider booking accommodations and planning your Venice visits strategically to minimize the impact of these fees.
Italy remains a captivating destination, and a little preparation can go a long way in making your trip unforgettable.
