Jack and Jill of America, Inc., one of the nation’s oldest organizations dedicated to the development of African American children, has issued an urgent call to action for Black families following the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells. The organization’s statement, titled “Our Sons Deserve to Grow Old: In loving memory of Nolan Xavier Wells,” encourages parents to prioritize open communication, safety planning, and increased awareness regarding their children’s social circles in the wake of the teenager’s recent passing.
Wells, a college football player, went missing on July 4 during a recreational trip to Horn Island, Mississippi. According to reports, he had traveled to the island by boat with a group of friends, who subsequently returned to the mainland without him. His mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing shortly thereafter, and his body was recovered by authorities on July 6.
Organization Calls for Accountability and Vigilance
In a public statement released across its social media channels on July 9, Jack and Jill of America emphasized the necessity of protective parenting and community accountability. The organization, which was founded in 1938 and maintains a network of more than 50,000 families, framed the tragedy as a moment for families to re-evaluate how they prepare their children for the world.
“His passing calls us to reflect on the sacred responsibility we share to protect our children, strengthen their instincts, and build circles of care rooted in dignity, accountability, and mutual concern,” the organization wrote. The statement stressed that mothers and caregivers hold a “sacred charge” to know who their children are with and to ensure those companions share a commitment to their safety.
The organization’s call to action included practical guidance for families, urging them to implement safety plans and reinforce the principle that groups should remain together during outings. “Our sons deserve to grow old,” the statement read. “Every Black child deserves to come home. No child should ever be treated as disposable.”
Family Seeks Answers into Circumstances of Death
The circumstances surrounding Wells’ death remain a subject of intense concern for his family. As public attention on the case has grown, the family has retained civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump. Crump has publicly advocated for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the events that occurred on Horn Island during the July 4 holiday weekend.
The family continues to seek answers regarding why the group returned to the mainland without him, a detail that remains central to the questions posed by his representatives.
