John Maus Addresses Capitol Riot Controversy & Political Stance Ahead of New Album
John Maus, the enigmatic electronic musician,is attempting to navigate a complex public reckoning. Following widespread criticism stemming from his presence at the January 6th Capitol riot, Maus has been largely ostracized within indie music circles. Now, with a new album, Later Than You Think, on the horizon (September 26th via Young), he’s offering a more detailed clarification of his actions and beliefs.
The initial reports painted a troubling picture: a musician known for intellectually challenging and often politically-charged work seemingly aligning himself with a pro-Trump protest. However, Maus quickly clarified he “absolutely” opposes Trumpism. but the damage was done, and skepticism remained.
Why Was He At The Capitol?
Maus recently sat down with Stereogum to elaborate. He explained his presence wasn’t a show of support, but rather to document the events for director Alex Lee Moyer. He feared openly sharing his political views would be immediately dismissed as damage control.
“I thought my legacy would speak for itself,” Maus told Stereogum. He initially posted a cryptic message condemning racism and nationalism, believing it would be sufficient. Clearly, it wasn’t.
A Critique of the Political landscape
The conversation took a turn toward a broader critique of the current political climate. Maus expressed frustration with what he sees as a forced choice between undesirable options.
He articulated this frustration with a pointed example:
The feeling of being forced to choose between “genocide with two thumbs up” and supporting policies he disagrees with, like funding the iron Dome.
He feels this dynamic extends to pressure from some on the radical left to simply vote “blue no matter who.”
Maus acknowledges this perspective isn’t universally accepted, even among his friends. He’s aware of the criticism that refusing to participate in what some see as necessary evils is “not adult.” yet, he bristles at being equated with figures like conservative activist charlie Kirk.
Facing the Consequences
Maus seems resigned to the fact that some will never accept his explanation. He understands the depth of the offense caused by his initial association with the Capitol riot.
“I appreciate anybody who would give me the benefit of the doubt,” he saeid. “I feel like there’s nothing that I could do now… Just have to expect for the rest of my life, if I put something on there’ll inevitably be 15 comments.”
notably, Maus did not address reports detailing his financial contributions to Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign, as documented by the Federal Election Commission. This omission is likely to fuel further scrutiny.
what Does This Mean For You?
This situation highlights the complexities of navigating political expression as an artist. It also underscores the lasting impact of perceived political alignment in today’s highly polarized surroundings.Whether you choose to listen to Later Than You Think with a renewed perspective or remain unconvinced, Maus’s attempt to clarify his position offers a valuable case study in accountability, public perception, and the challenges of rebuilding trust.
