Swinney’s predecessor, Humza Yousaf announced a week ago that he is leaving the SNP and therefore the Scottish government. As a precursor to his decision, Yousaf canceled the government cooperation agreement between the SNP and the Greens in 2021, before the Green Party ministers left the government and joined the motion of no confidence initiated by the opposition Conservative Party in Scotland against Yousaf.

In the end, the vote was not held, as Humza Yousaf announced her resignation last Monday, admitting that she had underestimated the anger that her decision to end government cooperation with the Greens – and to withdraw long-term environmental goals as a precursor to this – had fueled among the SNP’s former Green Party allies. .

By the nomination deadline that expired on Monday afternoon, no one had officially announced that they wanted to run for the position of party leader. Thus, 60-year-old John Swinney became the new leader of the Scottish National Party unopposed and is expected to take over the post of Prime Minister this week. Swinney was also leader of the SNP from 2000 to 2004, but then left due to internal disputes.

The primary political program of the SNP, which has been in power for 17 years, is the independence of Scotland. A referendum on this was already held in September 2014, but then the opponents of secession won with a 55 percent majority.
