Emma Thompson Tackles Desperation and Isolation in New Thriller, “Dead Winter”
A chilling new thriller, “Dead Winter,” hitting DVD this Tuesday, showcases the remarkable talent of Emma Thompson alongside rising star Mary Greer. Filmed across the stark landscapes of Finland and Germany, the film delves into the complexities of grief, desperation, and the lengths people will go to protect what they hold dear.

A Story Driven by Subtext and Performance
“Dead Winter” centers on Barb (Thompson), a widow grappling wiht loss who discovers a disturbing scene: a couple (Greer and Marc Menchaca) holding a young woman (Laurel Marsden) captive in a secluded cabin. The narrative unfolds with minimal dialog, forcing viewers to rely heavily on the actors’ nuanced expressions and body language.
This reliance on non-verbal storytelling presented a unique challenge for Greer. “It definitely made me ask a lot of questions of our writers and director,” she explained. “I was constantly trying to understand the ‘why’ behind every action, every emotion.”
The filmmakers’ trust in the audience’s intelligence was a refreshing aspect of the project. “They really respect the audience,” Greer noted. “They believe ‘they’ll get it,’ wich isn’t always the case in modern film and television.”

“I knew the acting part would be something I would remember for the rest of my life,” Greer said.”But what I didn’t expect was what she was really like. She instantly made me feel agreeable, inviting me to dinner the moment I arrived at the hotel.”
Facing the Elements: A Physically Demanding Shoot
The film’s remote locations and harsh winter conditions added another layer of difficulty to the production. Greer experienced her first-ever fight scenes, all while battling freezing temperatures and deep snow.

“It added a lot of tension, definitely,” Greer laughed.”So, that made my job a bit easier.”
