Beyond Visuals: Crafting Trauma on Screen with Thermal Imaging in “Him“
Filmmakers are constantly pushing boundaries to deliver immersive and impactful experiences for audiences. A recent example of this innovation comes from the production of “Him,” where a unique approach to visualizing a character’s internal trauma was brilliantly executed. It involved combining cutting-edge thermal camera technology with traditional cinematography.

The Challenge: Visualizing the Invisible

They drew inspiration from previous work utilizing stereoscopic day-for-night footage,specifically “Nope.” This sparked a conversation about integrating thermal imaging into the process. The idea was to capture a thermal image simultaneously with standard footage, then seamlessly blend the two.
A Rigorous, Innovative Setup
Achieving this wasn’t simple. It demanded a custom-built rig. A FLIR thermal camera was mounted directly above the Alexa 35 camera. This allowed for synchronized capture of both thermal and standard images.
This setup, however, presented a unique challenge: maintaining focus on both cameras simultaneously. It required the expertise of two assistant cinematographers. One focused on the FLIR camera, while the other managed the Alexa. To facilitate this, a 3D-printed focus ring was ingeniously hot-glued onto the thermal camera.
Experimentation and Refinement
Once the rig was operational, the team began experimenting with different techniques to achieve the desired visual effect. They explored using various forms of ice and heat to create varying thermal signatures on screen.
Further refinement occurred in post-production. Visual effects artists added layers of detail – like the unsettling imagery of “brains sloshing” – to amplify the depiction of physical trauma. The result is a harrowing and realistic portrayal of the character’s experience.
