BlackJack Studio has officially announced Langrisser: Sea of Sword, a new tactical RPG for PC, iOS, and Android. The title features a score by Yasunori Nishiki and introduces a darker, faction-driven narrative set on a mist-shrouded continent. Global pre-registration is currently open via the game’s official website.
BlackJack Studio’s Shift Toward a Darker Tactical Narrative
The Langrisser franchise, which has spanned 35 years, is moving away from the bright, heroic tone seen in its recent entries. According to reporting by IGN, the latest installment, Langrisser: Sea of Sword, focuses on a more intense power struggle where the fates of entire nations are at stake. Players assume the role of the “Nameless,” a protagonist struggling to recover lost memories while traveling with a mysterious white-haired companion across a continent defined by the “Sea of Mists.”

This tonal shift is reflected in the game’s visual design. The concept trailer reinforces this change, contrasting images of sun-drenched castles with decaying underwater remnants and discarded battlefield equipment.
Yasunori Nishiki Joins as Composer
To support the game’s narrative evolution, BlackJack Studio has tapped acclaimed composer Yasunori Nishiki to create the soundtrack. Nishiki is widely recognized for his work on the Octopath Traveler series, for which he received a nomination for Best Music at The Game Awards. His portfolio also includes arrangements for Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kingdom Hearts III, and Granblue Fantasy Versus.
“Through music rich with narrative power, he will draw you into the cruelty, grandeur, and surging drama of this new continent.”
Gameplay Evolution and Multi-Platform Release
While the studio aims for a “next-generation leap” in graphical fidelity, the core gameplay remains rooted in the series’ tradition of squad-based tactical combat. Gematsu reports that the title is being developed for PC, iOS, Android, and other platforms, with a simultaneous worldwide release planned. The developers emphasize that terrain, unit types, and strategic positioning remain the primary factors for victory, though player decisions will now have a more pronounced impact on the progression of the story.

BlackJack Studio, the same team responsible for the 2018 title Langrisser Mobile, has confirmed that the first gameplay video is currently in the final stages of polishing. While a specific release date has not been announced, the studio is encouraging fans to sign up for global pre-registration through the official website to receive future updates.
Industry Context: New Releases and Updates
The announcement of Sea of Sword arrives alongside other industry developments in the strategy and simulation genre. For instance, Gematsu recently reported that the daughter-raising simulation game Volcano Princess is set for a multi-platform release on July 30, priced at $10.99 / €10.79 / ¥1,300. Unlike Langrisser, which is moving into a new chapter, Volcano Princess is expanding its existing content with a new dungeon titled “Path of Two Shadows” and full Japanese voice support.
While Volcano Princess provides a clear timeline for its upcoming launch, the Langrisser development team has opted for a more gradual rollout of information. Fans waiting for further details on the “Sea of Mist” setting or the specific mechanics of the “Nameless” protagonist’s journey will need to monitor the official community channels as the studio releases content sequentially.
