Europe has found itself in the most serious security political situation since World War II following Russia’s attack on Ukraine. In the reporting from the war, there are terms that are not always easy to understand. Here are some words to watch out for.

Artillery:

Collective name for heavier firearms. Artillery is used to fire indirect fire, which means firing at targets that cannot be seen. Cannons, rockets and grenade launchers are examples of artillery.

Defensive Weapons:

The debate about whether Sweden should assist Ukraine with so-called defensive weapons has been a hot political issue since Russia’s invasion. Weapon systems intended to combat aircraft, helicopters or other craft conducting aerial attacks or violating airspace.

Mechanized units:

Military unit where transport takes place with armored vehicles such as tracked vehicles or tanks. Dressings that are transported on trucks are called motorized dressings instead.

Anti-tank:

Weapon systems specially adapted to combat and knock out armored vehicles such as tanks.

Breakaway Region:

Region that breaks away and declares itself independent from the country it previously belonged to./TT
