A legal dispute has emerged concerning the popular song ”Canción del Mariachi,” as the band Los Lobos alleges that Sony Music Entertainment has failed to properly account for royalties generated by the track’s surge in popularity. This situation highlights the complexities of music licensing and the importance of accurate royalty reporting in the streaming era.
According to the lawsuit, the song’s profile dramatically increased after it became the chosen “walkout” song and “anthem” for UFC fighter Ilia “el Matador” Topuria. This association reportedly lead to the song’s inclusion in television broadcasts across numerous countries, substantially expanding its reach.
Despite accumulating over 600 million streams globally, and its prominent use by Topuria, Los Lobos claims Sony has not provided a single royalty statement detailing any streaming revenue or licensing activity related to the 2018 Milan Streaming Release of the song. The band characterizes this lack of accounting as a serious oversight.
The situation became more pointed in 2019 when Sony Music Masterworks acquired Milan. Following the acquisition, both companies allegedly altered the song’s title on Spotify to “Canción del Mariachi (Ilia Topuria ‘El Matador’ Anthem),” acknowledging Topuria’s endorsement and its impact on the song’s visibility.
