Researchers have confirmed the existence of a thriving coral reef ecosystem off the coast of Benin, located more than 175 feet below the surface. The site, which was first hinted at by surveyors over 60 years ago, supports at least eight types of coral and eight species of fish, according to reports from the project team. This discovery provides a rare, undisturbed look at a mesophotic coral ecosystem (MCE) in West Africa, offering potential new insights into historical climate systems through future paleoclimatic study.
Discovery of a Mesophotic Coral Ecosystem
The reef system, found at depths exceeding 175 feet, is categorized as a mesophotic coral ecosystem. These light-dependent communities occupy the transition zone between shallow reefs and deeper benthic habitats. While these ecosystems are increasingly recognized for their role in marine biodiversity, they remain among the least explored regions in tropical and subtropical waters. The Benin site appears as a patchy collection of corals situated on a rocky substrate, providing a critical refuge for diverse marine life.
Field observations have identified a variety of species within the site, including six types of soft coral and two species of black coral. The reef also serves as a habitat for several fish species, such as golden African snappers, Monrovia doctorfish, blackbar soldierfish, West African goatfish, and Guinean angelfish. The research team is actively working to secure formal protections for the newly rediscovered reef. Houangninan Midinoudewa, an oceanographic researcher at the Benin Marine Conservation Club, is leading the advocacy for designating the area as a marine protected area. Midinoudewa, who specializes in the study of elasmobranchs—sharks, rays, and skates—is currently submitting an application to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to have the site recognized as an Important Shark and Ray Area.

Local ecological knowledge has been instrumental in identifying the reef’s potential inhabitants. Based on reports from local fishermen, researchers anticipate that the area hosts several species, including sawback angel sharks, silky sharks, brown skates, and marbled stingrays. The team views this discovery as a catalyst for broader marine research in the Gulf of Guinea, an region they describe as underserved by current scientific projects. Zinzindohoue emphasized the importance of local leadership in this effort, noting that the responsibility for uncovering and protecting these underwater resources rests with the nations adjacent to them.
Future Research and Scientific Impact
The team behind the discovery intends to utilize the site to establish a research hub in the Gulf of Guinea. By documenting the exact composition of the reef, they aim to address gaps in regional marine data and highlight the necessity of protecting ecosystems currently threatened by resource exploitation. While no coral samples have been extracted to date, the classification of the site as a mesophotic coral ecosystem marks a significant milestone for West African marine science.
The researchers are now awaiting the outcome of their application to the IUCN and continue to monitor the site to better understand its ecological requirements.
