Lumen Expands High-Speed Network to Fuel the AI Revolution & Cloud Connectivity
Lumen Technologies is making a critically important investment in network infrastructure, dramatically expanding its Ethernet and IP services to over 70 third-party datacentres across 16 major metropolitan areas. This move isn’t just about faster connections; it’s a strategic play to underpin the burgeoning AI economy and the demands of modern, multi-cloud enterprise architectures.
The expansion covers key markets including Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York city, and Seattle, with San antonio slated for addition in late 2025. This broad footprint provides businesses with unprecedented access to critical digital infrastructure.
On-Demand Connectivity for a Dynamic World
What sets Lumen apart is the agility it offers. Customers can now provision bandwidth in minutes, scaling up to 400Gbps and paying only for the resources they consume. this “as-a-service” model is crucial in today’s fast-paced habitat, where fluctuating demands – particularly from AI and data-intensive applications - require rapid scalability and cost control.
Lumen’s service portfolio includes:
Ethernet On-Demand: real-time activation for immediate connectivity.
Internet on-Demand: Scalable internet access, deployed precisely when and where needed.
E-Line: Secure, predictable point-to-point Ethernet transport.
E-LAN: Seamless site interconnectivity via multipoint-to-multipoint Ethernet.
* E-Access: Simplified access to broader Ethernet networks, extending enterprise reach.
The Advantage of Network Ownership
Lumen’s ownership and operation of the underlying network is a key differentiator. This control translates directly into benefits for customers: greater reliability, enhanced performance, and a level of control often lacking with other providers. It allows for proactive management and optimization, ensuring consistent service delivery.
Addressing the AI Capacity Crunch
Industry analysts recognize the importance of this investment.Ghassan Abdo, VP of research at IDC, highlights that Lumen’s network expansion is a “strategic move to meet the growing demand for more capacity and reach across datacentres,” particularly in light of the AI boom. He emphasizes that network infrastructure is becoming “an indispensable resource” for businesses embracing AI and multi-cloud strategies.
Ashley Haynes-Gaspar, Lumen’s Chief Revenue officer, echoes this sentiment, stating the investment is about “creating the digital foundation for an AI-first economy.” Lumen aims to empower customers to move faster, scale smarter, and lead digital transformation, not just keep pace with it.
Beyond Datacentres: Strengthening Trans-Pacific connectivity
This datacentre expansion is part of a broader network investment strategy. Lumen recently announced it will provide the terrestrial backhaul connectivity for the Juno Trans-Pacific cable system, a 10,000km cable capable of delivering up to 350 Tbps.Lumen’s dark fibre backhaul will connect the Juno cable’s US landing point in Grover Beach, California, to key Points of Presence (PoPs) in San Jose and Los Angeles. This connection will facilitate data transfer to major cloud hubs, datacentres, and enterprise networks across the US, and ultimately, to Japan. This demonstrates Lumen’s commitment to bolstering global connectivity and supporting data-intensive applications.
A Foundation for Future Growth
Lumen’s strategic investments in both datacentre connectivity and trans-pacific infrastructure position the company as a critical enabler of the next wave of digital innovation. By providing the performance, flexibility, and scale that businesses need, Lumen is not simply offering network services – it’s building the foundation for a future powered by AI and cloud computing.
