Man Charged With Murder After Fatal Fight With Neighbour at Lengkok Bahru

A 59-year-old man was arrested following a fatal fight with a neighbour at Block 55 Lengkok Bahru on July 20. The victim, also 59, was found motionless at a 16th-floor lift lobby and later died at the National University Hospital. The suspect faces a murder charge in court on July 22. If convicted, the suspect faces the death penalty.

Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 4.45pm on July 20, according to official police statements. Upon arrival at the 16th floor of Block 55 Lengkok Bahru, officers discovered the victim lying motionless. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) transported the man to the National University Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

History of Conflict at Block 55

Residents in the block described a longstanding feud between the two men, who lived several units apart on the 16th floor. According to a neighbour who has lived in the building for about four years, the disputes between the two men were a common occurrence. The neighbour alleged that the men would start arguing in the morning, often shouting Hokkien vulgarities at each other from about 7.30am. The neighbour described how the two men would be topless while engaging in these arguments.

Another resident, who declined to be named, told Lianhe Zaobao that the victim had moved into the block over two years ago and would often return home intoxicated. The resident alleged that the victim frequently urinated along the common corridor, causing a foul smell and drawing complaints from neighbours, including the suspect. According to the resident, the two men had argued on multiple occasions over the issue. The neighbours all told him to stop doing it, but he simply ignored them, the resident claimed. A resident named Joel, who works as a private tutor, noted that he had a cordial relationship with the dead man, but added that the man who died never got along with the other man and would take the stairs just to avoid him.

Evidence and Police Investigation

Authorities have confirmed that preliminary investigations revealed both men knew each other. During a visit to the site at about 11.45am on July 21, reporters observed blood stains and a bloodied footprint along the 16th-storey corridor. Joel told The Straits Times that he discovered the incident while reviewing footage from his home security camera. In the footage, two men can be heard shouting at each other, with one person threatening to hurt the other. The dispute lasted for about three minutes.

Additionally, a neighbour who declined to be named claimed that a knife was thrown from the 16th floor during the incident, landing in front of a coffee shop below. A photograph of a knife found on the ground was provided by a Lianhe Zaobao reader. While police investigations are ongoing, the suspect is scheduled to be charged with murder on July 22. Reflecting on the tragedy, one neighbour stated: No one thought it would escalate to this.

Recent Context on Neighbour Disputes

The incident at Lengkok Bahru follows a series of violent encounters involving neighbours in recent months. Police data from February indicated that there were 137 knife-related incidents in 2025, a slight increase from 131 cases in 2024. Previous fatal disputes include a September 24, 2025, incident at Block 323 Yishun Central, where a violent attack over a noise dispute resulted in the death of a 30-year-old Vietnamese woman. In that case, 66-year-old Koh Ah Hwee was charged with murder. On May 26, a 21-year-old woman died after being stabbed by a 22-year-old man near the lift landing on the 12th floor of Block 248 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2. Additionally, a 70-year-old man died on March 9 after a fight in Geylang, where he suffered stab wounds to the chest.
