Marathon Game Director Leaves Bungie At A Tumultuous Time

Joe Ziegler, the game director for Bungie’s upcoming title Marathon, has announced his departure from the studio. His exit marks the latest leadership change for the project as the Sony-owned developer navigates a period of significant corporate restructuring and internal turnover. Ziegler, who joined Bungie in late 2022 following a 12-year tenure at Riot Games, confirmed that he is moving on to a new opportunity, though he has not yet disclosed his next destination.

The leadership transition sees Del Chafe III, previously the assistant game director, stepping into the role of game director for Marathon. Chafe III is set to lead the project alongside creative director Julia Nardin. In a statement regarding the shift, Ziegler expressed confidence in the remaining team, noting that both Chafe III and Nardin have been operating in strong leadership capacities. “I’m proud of them and I’m excited to see them helm the future of this crazy little world we’ve created together,” Ziegler stated.

Leadership Turnover at Bungie

The departure of Ziegler follows a series of high-profile staffing shifts within the studio. The Marathon project has seen multiple changes at the director level. Previously, Christopher Barrett served as the game director for the project before his departure following misconduct allegations. Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Barrett reached a settlement regarding his case with Bungie and Sony.

Leadership Turnover at Bungie

These changes occur against the backdrop of broader economic challenges at the studio. In June 2024, Bungie implemented a round of layoffs that affected staff across both the Destiny and Marathon development teams.

The Future of Marathon

Despite the instability, Ziegler’s farewell message emphasized his commitment to the vision of the game. He described the project as a “windy mission to bring a dark and terrifying space survival frontier” to players. While the transition in leadership is immediate, Ziegler indicated that the development path remains focused on delivering the game to its audience. “The mission will continue in new and surprising ways so stay tuned for what this team has in store for you!” he wrote.
