Devils Face Goaltending Uncertainty as Markstrom Sidelined by Injury
The New Jersey Devils are navigating a challenging start to the season, now compounded by a lower-body injury to goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Coach Sheldon Keefe announced Wednesday that Markstrom will be out for a couple of weeks, creating immediate questions in net for the team.
This setback arrives as Markstrom’s second season with the Devils has been a mixed bag so far. He’s secured wins in two of his first three starts, but his statistics – a 3.89 goals-against average and .845 save percentage – haven’t yet reflected the expectations placed upon him.
Goaltending Shuffle: Daws Called Up
To address the situation, the Devils have recalled Nico Daws from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. You can expect daws to share goaltending duties with veteran Jake Allen. Allen himself recently exited a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets due to cramping.
Markstrom managed to play 20 minutes in that game, stopping eight of the nine shots he faced before exiting. Fortunately, the Devils have experience with Daws stepping into the NHL lineup.
He’s effectively split time between the NHL and AHL over the past few seasons, appearing in 52 games since the 2021-22 season. Last season, he showcased remarkable numbers with a 3-1 record, a 1.60 goals-against average, and a .939 save percentage across six games.
A Growing Injury List for New Jersey
Markstrom’s injury isn’t an isolated incident. The Devils are currently managing several other injuries throughout their roster, impacting their overall depth.
Here’s a breakdown of the current injury situation:
* Evgenii Dadonov: The forward, recently signed in free agency, is on injured reserve after sustaining a hand injury in the season opener.
* stefan Noesen: A forward, Noesen is progressing well and nearing a return to the lineup.
* Seamus Casey: The defenseman has resumed skating but remains out of the lineup for now.
* Johnathan Kovacevic: Another defenseman,Kovacevic is also skating, but his return is expected to be several months away.
These injuries present a significant hurdle for the Devils as they strive to establish consistency early in the season. However, the team is confident in its ability to navigate these challenges and remain competitive.
You can anticipate the Devils leaning on their depth and the contributions of players like Daws to weather this storm and build momentum as the season unfolds. It’s a test of resilience for a team with high aspirations.
