A Manhattan Seafood Destination: experiencing the Legacy of Oceana
Oceana, a Michelin-recognized restaurant just a short walk from the marriott Marquis, offers a refined dining experience perfectly suited for theatergoers. It’s a cornerstone of the Livanos Restaurant Group, a family-operated collection that also includes Molyvos, Moderne Barn, and City Limits Diner. Each restaurant boasts a unique style and cuisine, yet they all share a commitment to remarkable service, premium ingredients, and a welcoming atmosphere.
This foundation stems from the entrepreneurial spirit of John Livanos, a Greek immigrant who launched a Manhattan luncheonette over four decades ago. Now, the second generation – Nick, Bill, and Corina Livanos – are building upon his vision. They skillfully blend modern culinary innovation with the core values that have guided the Livanos family since the beginning.
A Party of Seafood
As the name suggests, Oceana specializes in seafood. You’ll find an extraordinary selection of oysters sourced from premier locations like Fishers Island, New York; Sloop Point, new Jersey; and Pebble Beach, Washington. For a truly extravagant experience, consider the $325 Oceana platter, brimming with oysters, clams, shrimp, lobster, and Osetra caviar.
However, a more approachable, yet equally delightful, option awaits. We recently enjoyed a beautifully prepared Scottish salmon served with lentils, wild rice, spinach, shitake mushrooms, and a delicate cream sauce.
The Art of Wine Pairing
The dining experience at oceana extends beyond the food. Our sommelier, Matthew Harper, proved to be an invaluable resource, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of both food and wine. Even for those of us who rarely indulge, his expertise was captivating.
We asked Harper for his proposal to complement our Scottish salmon. He explained, “it has a bite – it’s oily and acidic – and it needs a wine to bite it back.” This insightful approach characterized the entire evening, filled with energy, laughter, and expertly curated pairings.
Harper ultimately suggested the red dessert wine from Bodega Pablo Fallabrino, describing it as “decadence in a glass” and a perfect accompaniment to the cherry-chocolate semifreddo/brownie. It was a fitting end to a memorable meal.
A Lasting Impression
Oceana delivers a dining experience that earns its accolades. From the quality of the ingredients to the attentive service and the masterful wine pairings, every detail is thoughtfully considered. You’ll leave feeling satisfied and impressed, understanding why this restaurant has become a Manhattan institution.
It’s a place that consistently earns high marks – and brownie points, as we discovered.
