A Lifesaving Gift: How One Woman’s Kindness Gave a Husband a Future
Jeff Deckman faced a daunting reality: end-stage renal disease. His kidneys were failing, and his future felt increasingly uncertain. He worried about missing life’s milestones – his children’s graduations, birthdays, and simply being present for his family.This is a story of hope, resilience, and the extraordinary power of living organ donation.
Facing a Critical Health Challenge
Deckman’s declining health prompted his wife, Jen, to take action. She realized the limitations of traditional outreach methods.”People do billboards and t-shirts and social media,” Jen explained. “that ignited something in me because I thought, ‘What’s the option?'” She bravely asked for help, acknowledging that many find it challenging, and considered the possibility of facing this challenge without her husband.
A Facebook Post Changes Everything
On february 24, 2024, Jen shared Jeff’s story on Facebook, posting a flyer on local community pages, including “This Is Havre De Grace.” This is were Robin Phelan discovered his plea. She felt an immediate connection to the Deckman family.
“I opened it, I read it, and I just promptly felt drawn to this family,” Phelan said.”Jen’s words about how much she loved her husband, how much he is a family man, really resonated with me.”
The Decision to Donate
Phelan carefully considered the risks involved in becoming a living donor. After thoughtful deliberation, she knew what she had to do. She shared her intention with her husband, Kevin, stating, “This guy needs to see his kids graduate and see all the events in thier lives.”
Kevin was immediately supportive. “That comment sold me on it,” he said. “If this is what you want to do, I’m in it all the way.”
Rigorous Testing and Approval
The journey to donation wasn’t immediate. Several months of comprehensive tests, questionnaires, scans, and meetings followed. Robin and Jen exchanged a few brief messages during this time. on a tuesday in August, Robin received the life-changing news.
“I got a call saying,’You have been approved,'” Robin recalled. She immediately messaged Jen, “Let’s do this,” and jen responded with hopeful anticipation, “Please tell me what I think you’re telling me,” to which Robin confirmed, “Yes, we’ve got a date, November 11th.”
A New Bond is Formed
Seven weeks post-surgery, the Phelans and Deckmans reunited. They reflected on their first in-person meeting in September 2024, after the surgery was approved.
“I was excited,” Kevin said. “We were meeting for the first time, but at that point, we were joined together, and it’s been that way ever as.”
A Positive Outlook and Lasting connection
The prognosis is excellent for both Jeff and robin, and the bond between the families is strong. Jeff eloquently described the experiance: “I’m physically attached to somebody brand new. I think that bond itself is forever now. It’s hard to describe that feeling that there really is a physical bond to somebody else.”
A new kidney has given Deckman a future he feared losing. He can now look forward to beach days and birthdays with his family. More importantly, he’s gained a new family along the way.
Phelan expressed her gratitude, saying, “It feels so crazy. It’s a blessing to me. I feel like I got more than I gave quite honestly in all this.”
