Whitney Houston Receives Her First Official Mattel Barbie Doll
Mattel has officially unveiled a collector edition Barbie doll modeled after legendary American singer Whitney Houston, launching the product on August 9, 2026, to coincide with what would have been her 63rd birthday. Designed by Carlyle Nuera as part of the Barbie Signature line, the doll marks the very first official release dedicated to the interpreter of “I Will Always Love You,” offering fans a meticulous recreation of her iconic aesthetic at the height of her 1980s pop superstardom.
The release brings to life one of the most recognizable appearances in music history. It draws direct inspiration from Houston’s look in the 1987 music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).” The collectible doll features a form-fitting purple dress, vibrant oversized multi-colored earrings, heavy stage makeup, and the singer’s signature voluminous curls from that era. An accompanying miniature microphone and stand complete the display ensemble, housed in packaging designed by Priscila Bara alongside a certificate of authenticity.
A Concept Revived From Early Discussions With the Estate
While the doll arrived in stores in August 2026, the concept actually originated more than twenty years prior. Houston herself originally discussed the possibility of creating a signature doll with Mattel during her lifetime, holding initial conversations with her sister-in-law and eventual estate executrix, Pat Houston.
At that time, the singer envisioned a doll reflecting her role in the 1992 romantic drama film “The Bodyguard,” where she starred alongside Kevin Costner. Although that initial project never materialized while she was alive, Mattel ultimately revived the concept decades later in close partnership with Pat Houston and the estate.
Sculpting the 1980s Pop Icon’s Likeness
They adjusted hair color, footwear, jewelry, and cosmetics to ensure the final product faithfully mirrors the artist’s appearance in her celebrated 1987 music video.

Atlanta Gala Preview and Global Commercial Launch
Public celebrations surrounding the release began on August 8, 2026, in Atlanta, where the doll was previewed during the fifth annual Legacy of Love Gala hosted by the Whitney E.
Commercial distribution officially commenced the following day on August 9. The Barbie is retail priced at 60 dollars across Mattel Creations and select major American toy distributors.
A Broader Wave of Tributes and Legacy Honors in 2026
The rollout accompanies a broader wave of recognitions honoring Houston’s enduring legacy fourteen years after her passing on February 11, 2012, at the age of 48. In addition to the Barbie debut, the estate and affiliated institutions have released “WH1TNEY,” a compilation album gathering all 11 of her chart-topping singles from the Billboard Hot 100.
Furthermore, the Recording Academy honored her career this year with a special Lifetime Achievement Award, and her name is slated for formal induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
