Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McConaughey clarified that while the rumor followed him for years, it lacked any basis in reality. The 56-year-old actor stated plainly that he never received an offer to star alongside Kate Winslet in the historic drama, dismissing claims that he willingly walked away from one of the most lucrative projects in cinematic history.
“People have said to me many times: ‘I can’t believe that you turned down Titanic.’ Then I just answer: ‘I didn’t,'” McConaughey explained during the podcast appearance, noting that he had even heard director James Cameron believed the story. “I was never offered that role. If I was, I need to find that agent of mine, because then they owe me money.”

Although McConaughey never received a formal contract offer, his connection to the production was genuine. He participated in an extensive audition process for the tragic hero, testing directly opposite Kate Winslet, who had already secured the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater.
The actor recalled leaving the audition room with an intense feeling of confidence, completely convinced that his performance had won over the casting directors and producers.
“I had a fantastic audition—at least I thought I did myself,” McConaughey said. “The producers were there, and I played against Kate. When I walked out of there, I was absolutely sure the role was mine. But it wasn’t, of course.”
