Three years after the debut of the new Multivan, VW introduced the new California. This iconic camper debuts with a plug-in hybrid option, all-wheel drive and two side sliding doors, marking a significant improvement in its architecture.
The new VW California offers three drive systems, all paired with an automatic transmission: TDI with 150 hp, TSI with 204 hp. and the new hybrid drive (eHybrid) with a system output of 245 hp, which can be combined with 4Motion all-wheel drive.
Based on the current long version of the Multivan, all versions of the new California (including Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean) have the same dimensions: They are 5,173 mm long, 1,941 mm wide and 1 990 mm with the folding roof removed. Despite its spacious interior, the California remains maneuverable enough to fit into most garages, with the 3,124mm wheelbase maximizing interior space. With the roof closed, the interior height is 1297mm, and with the folding roof open it rises to 2108mm, which provides enough room for most people to stand upright.
In terms of interior design, the new models feature removable individual seats in the rear, equipped with drawers for added storage convenience, along with the driver and passenger seats. Using the MQB platform, the California also boasts a host of driver assistance systems, including Travel Assist, which handles steering, braking and acceleration, incorporating real-time traffic data and navigation.
VW has announced a June 2024 launch, just in time for the upcoming travel season.
