Suffolk Construction has appointed Melissa Kiefer as its new Vice President of Strategy, tasking her with expanding the firm’s healthcare and life sciences project portfolio across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Kiefer, who brings over 15 years of experience in capital project management and institutional development, joins the firm to bridge the gap between healthcare operational requirements and high-stakes infrastructure delivery.
Kiefer previously served at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), where she was responsible for establishing and leading the institution’s inaugural in-house planning, design, and construction department. Her tenure at HSS involved overseeing long-term capital planning and managing the lifecycle of complex facilities development projects.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure Strategy
In her new role at Suffolk, Kiefer is expected to align the company’s internal design and construction teams with the specific, data-driven needs of healthcare providers.
“Melissa’s healthcare experience gives her a valuable perspective that will be a tremendous asset to our clients and project teams,” said Joseph Whalen, Senior Vice President of Operations at Suffolk New York. “Complex healthcare projects require disciplined planning and deep coordination with our institutional partners. Suffolk’s data-driven approach helps us deliver projects safely and efficiently, and Melissa’s collaborative leadership and expertise will further strengthen that approach.”
The Intersection of Design and Clinical Outcomes
According to her statement regarding the move, she plans to leverage her background as a healthcare-provider-side leader to help organizations translate their strategic long-term goals into physical spaces that support clinical care.
“Suffolk has built a strong reputation for bringing innovation, transparency and disciplined execution to complex capital investments,” Kiefer stated. “I’m excited to join a team that understands healthcare construction is ultimately about supporting patients, caregivers and communities. By bringing together planning, operational, and technical delivery insights, we can enable healthcare organizations to translate strategic priorities into successful project outcomes that support care today and position the built environment for what’s next.”
Industry Impact and Future Projects
As Vice President of Strategy, Kiefer will oversee the alignment of Suffolk’s regional growth strategy in the Tri-State area, focusing on the specialized requirements of life sciences and healthcare facilities. Her experience in organizational alignment is expected to play a significant role in how the firm manages its partnerships with major institutional clients moving forward.
