Two of the greatest players in the world Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi can’t stand each other. This is what Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said. At the same time, their feud has helped them get better over the years.

The Argentine and the Portuguese have spent most of their careers competing against each other. They have raised the bar of individual brilliance to unprecedented heights. In total, they have 13 Ballon d’Ors and countless major honors – including Champions League titles, World Cup and European Championship trophies – collected between them.

Neither Messi nor Ronaldo have ever said anything bad about the other, but Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who has faced both in the past, has told Football365 of an epic battle for supremacy.

“They didn’t want to lose to the other, especially when it came to trophies like the Ballon d’Or. It’s always been the big rivalry for them – every season. They definitely made each other better. But I think they probably don’t realize it until their careers are over. As long as they’re still playing, I bet they won’t be able to stand it,” Carragher shared.

“It didn’t matter what one did, the other had to do it back. They could never enjoy what they had done because they knew the other would return it and score more goals. I always felt that if one of them scored a hat-trick, the next night the other would also score a hat-trick. They always had to completely overshadow each other,” the former football player also commented.

“It must have been tough mentally, that Messi-Ronaldo rivalry… And I would say more about Ronaldo because I think probably 7 or 8 people out of 10 would say Messi is the better one,” Jamie Carragher also commented.

“It’s unbelievable how many Ballons d’Or they’ve both won, considering they were competing against each other. Maybe someone could reach their level in two or three years, but for that long, I’m not sure we’ll ever see that again,” Carragher concluded.

Messi is currently competing in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, while Ronaldo is with Al Nasser in the Saudi Professional League.
