A visiting Frenchman tried to stop the knifeman who killed several people in a Sydney shopping center at the weekend. Now he can be rewarded with citizenship, suggests Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The Frenchman has been nicknamed “the pole man” since he picked up a pole and confronted the perpetrator on an escalator to prevent more victims during Saturday’s attack.

Albanese praises the Frenchman’s actions.

– This is a person we would welcome as an Australian citizen, even if it would be a loss for France. We thank him for his extraordinary courage.

– It says a lot about the nature of humanity at a time when we are facing difficult questions – that someone who is not a citizen of this country stood bravely at the top of the escalators and stopped the perpetrator from getting to another floor and possibly causing further carnage on the citizens .

The perpetrator – who was shot dead by the police – is said to have been mentally ill. Five women and one man were killed in the attack.
