Mexico to Launch 2026 National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT)

The Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública (INSP) will launch the fieldwork phase of the Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición Continua 2026 (ENSANUT Continua 2026) in July 2026, marking a nationwide statistical effort to update and expand public data on health and nutritional conditions across Mexico. According to official announcements from the Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública, the survey initiative is designed to deliver a comprehensive and reliable overview of population health, tracking everything from chronic disease prevalence to environmental risk factors over the coming months.

This extensive statistical undertaking aims to achieve three core objectives. First, the survey will provide a quantitative description of the health and nutritional status of the Mexican population for 2026. Second, by integrating previous editions of the survey, it will generate statistically representative estimates for each of the country’s 32 federal entities. Third, it will supply critical scientific and technical evidence to support the planning, evaluation, and enhancement of public health policies and programs nationwide.

Fieldwork operations will span eight strategic geographic regions—including Pacífico-Norte, Frontera, Pacífico-Centro, Centro-Norte, Centro, Ciudad de México and Estado de México, Pacífico-Sur, and Península. According to survey planning details, field teams intend to visit approximately 12,000 dwellings with the expectation of securing complete information from 9,000 households. To maintain data integrity, specialized brigades will deploy in coordinated phases through the latter half of the year.

Core Health Metrics and Specialized Measurements

The 2026 survey covers a wide spectrum of public health parameters to capture an accurate picture of health challenges in Mexico. Evaluators will examine the use of healthcare services to gauge patient access, medication availability, and treatment quality. Parallel assessments will measure vaccination coverage to evaluate the effectiveness and reach of public immunization campaigns. Furthermore, the initiative tracks the prevalence of major chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Beyond general health questionnaires, the protocol incorporates advanced physical measurements and clinical evaluations. Fieldworkers will gather anthropometric data, including weight, height, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Nutritional assessments will also involve blood sample collections to screen for anemia, micronutrient deficiencies, and vaccination serology. In addition, specialized health components will evaluate cardiovascular health using portable electrocardiographs to monitor heart electrical activity, alongside bioimpedance tools to measure body composition in adults.

Environmental health surveillance forms another vital pillar of the 2026 exercise. Field teams will measure blood lead concentrations, focusing specifically on children under five years of age and pregnant women to monitor and mitigate environmental risks. The study will also assess mental health and functional capacity among older adults, examine dietary habits, physical activity levels, tobacco use, and general well-being, and analyze the population-level impact of front-of-package food labeling regulations.

Fieldwork Phases and Operational Security

The execution of ENSANUT Continua 2026 relies on three distinct operational teams. Cartographers will work from July through September 2026 to map block layouts, establish access routes, register addresses in data systems, and identify selected housing units. Following this initial mapping, health interviewers will take the field from July through October 2026 to administer structured questionnaires covering health status, chronic disease history, wellness indicators, medical care access, and vaccination records.

The final phase involves nutrition interviewers working from July through November 2026. This group will conduct physical measurements, collect biological samples, and gather detailed dietary, physical activity, and breastfeeding data. To ensure public safety and confidence during these home visits, all official personnel will carry proper identification and wear standardized uniforms clearly marking them as part of the survey initiative.

As field operations commence, health officials and researchers will utilize the incoming data to shape future preventive strategies and public health interventions.
