Mexico City – Concerns regarding sovereignty and regional stability are escalating following the recent U.S. operation in Venezuela and escalating rhetoric towards potential interventions in Latin America. President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico voiced strong objections on Monday to the apprehension of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces, characterizing the action as a hazardous escalation of aggressive foreign policy that threatens the delicate balance of power in the Western Hemisphere.
“We firmly denounce any interference in the domestic affairs of other nations,” Sheinbaum declared during her regular press briefing. “History consistently demonstrates that interventionism does not foster democracy, prosperity, or enduring stability within Latin America.”
She emphasized that unilateral military actions and invasions are unacceptable foundations for international relations in the 21st century, arguing thay are counterproductive to achieving lasting peace and sustainable growth.
U.S. Threats and Regional Response
These statements arrived amidst heightened tensions, as former President Trump on Sunday alluded to further military actions against Venezuela, alongside raising the possibility of interventions extending to Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, and even Greenland. He expressed concerns about the influx of narcotics into the United States,stating,”Something must be done” to address the issue.
For months, Trump has been signaling a willingness to take decisive action against drug cartels, with some within his administration suggesting potential drone strikes targeting drug production facilities and other key locations within Mexican territory. Sheinbaum has consistently maintained that such actions would represent a blatant violation of Mexican sovereignty.
“The principles of sovereignty and self-determination are non-negotiable,” she asserted. “These are cornerstones of international law and must be universally respected without exception.”
Sheinbaum stands alongside a growing coalition of leftist leaders throughout Latin America who have vehemently criticized the U.S. following the unexpected raid on caracas this past Saturday.U.S. special operations forces reportedly abducted Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, the former president of the National Assembly.
Venezuelan authorities report at least 40 fatalities resulting from the operation, while the couple now face drug trafficking indictments in the Southern District of New York.
Conversely, right-leaning governments in the region have largely welcomed Maduro’s removal from power.

During her press conference, Sheinbaum passionately advocated for increased collaboration among Latin American nations, referencing the wisdom of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and george Washington.
“Washington championed good faith and justice for all nations, and the cultivation of peace and harmony,” she recalled.
She underscored that nations should not impose their will upon others or seek to exploit their resources, a clear allusion to Trump’s expressed interest in accessing Venezuela’s substantial oil reserves.
