Tom Jones on Embracing Gray and Letting Go of the Dye
Sir Tom Jones recently shared a charming anecdote about a pivotal moment in his image evolution – the day he decided to stop dyeing his hair. It all stemmed from a viewing of a past performance on Later… with Jools Holland.
He recalled a rather startling realization while watching himself on screen. “My God, my hair, it looks dyed,” he thought, noticing the artificial tone.
Further observation led to another amusing revelation. “And it looked permed!” he exclaimed.
Apparently, public perception mirrored his own self-assessment. People began commenting on his “dyed, permed hair.”
Jones clarified that while it wasn’t actually permed, the dye certainly created that impression. He decided he didn’t want to appear ”false” and made the bold move to let his natural grey shine through.
Interestingly, the response was overwhelmingly positive. “Everybody said, ‘Your hair looks great, Tom’,” he shared with a smile.
he simply responded with a gracious, “Thank you very much.” I’ve found that authenticity often resonates more deeply with audiences than striving for an unattainable ideal.
This story offers a glimpse into the personal journey of a music icon, demonstrating a willingness to embrace change and self-acceptance. It’s a refreshing reminder that sometimes, letting go is the best approach.
