Misty Copeland‘s impact on the world of ballet extends far beyond her breathtaking performances. She’s not just a principal dancer with American Ballet Theater (ABT); she’s a cultural force who has shattered barriers, broadened audiences, and redefined what it means to be a ballerina in the 21st century. Her story is one of perseverance, artistry, and a commitment to making ballet more inclusive.
A Rising Star & Expanding Repertoire
Copeland’s ascent was remarkable. She began ballet relatively late, at age 13, but quickly demonstrated exceptional talent. Her captivating stage presence quickly earned her leading roles in both classical and contemporary works.
You may recognize her from performances like Gamzatti in La Bayadère, Coppélia, and, most notably, The Firebird. These roles attracted a more diverse audience to ABT – a feat previously uncommon in the ballet world. Copeland didn’t limit herself to a single style. She excelled in traditional roles like Juliet and Odette/Odile,while also embracing new choreography from artists like Kyle Abraham and Marcelo Gomes.
Her artistry wasn’t confined to the stage. Copeland expanded her creative horizons through appearances on Broadway (On the Town),a memorable music video with Drake, and co-founding the film company, life in Motion Productions. This multifaceted career helped pave the way for greater artistic freedom for women within ballet.

A Moment of Recognition
I witnessed the impact of Copeland’s work firsthand during a 2018 internship at ABT. Walking through the company headquarters, I overheard a young Black man excitedly exclaim, “Yaaas! This diversity. Thank Misty!” – a spontaneous expression of gratitude akin to saying “Thank God!”
That moment perfectly encapsulates Copeland’s legacy. she’s not just a dancer; she’s a symbol of hope, progress, and the power of representation.
Thank Misty, indeed. Her contributions have irrevocably changed the landscape of ballet, and her influence will continue to inspire generations to come.
