The BBC has confirmed that the new comedy series Ann Droid, starring Diane Morgan and Sue Johnston, will premiere on Friday, 17 July at 9:30pm on BBC One. In a move to accommodate modern viewing habits, the broadcaster will make the entire six-part series available as a box set on BBC iPlayer on the same day.
Set in the year 2029, the sitcom explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and family dynamics. The narrative follows Linda, a second-hand “AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot,” who is introduced into the home of a recently widowed pensioner named Sue. The series is created and written by Diane Morgan and Australian comedian Sarah Kendall, and is produced by Boffola Pictures and Morgan’s own production company, Witchcraft Industries.
The Premise: AI Meets Domestic Life
The story centers on Sue, portrayed by Brookside and The Royle Family star Sue Johnston, who initially struggles to accept her new robotic companion. Her son, Michael—played by Paul Ready, known for his role in Motherland—purchases the robot as he prepares to move out of his mother’s home to focus on repairing his marriage. While Sue views the socially inept and overly attentive machine as an intrusion, she soon discovers that the robot possesses capabilities beyond basic health monitoring and medication reminders.
As the series progresses, Linda proves adept at managing household tasks that Michael had previously neglected. According to the production synopsis, the robot even assists Sue in settling long-standing personal scores, adding a layer of dark comedy to the premise of eldercare automation.
Cast and Production Insights
The production marks a reunion for Diane Morgan and Paul Ready, who previously worked together on the award-winning sitcom Motherland. Reflecting on the collaboration, Paul Ready noted in a BBC statement that the opportunity to work with Morgan again was an immediate draw, stating, “I don’t know much, but I do know that if you get a chance to work with Diane Morgan, you take it. Immediately!”
Diane Morgan, who also gained widespread acclaim for her mockumentary series Cunk on Earth, initially joked about the show’s development, saying, “I’m thrilled that the BBC has finally commissioned a programme about AI and how it will affect your mum.”
Sue Johnston expressed her enthusiasm for the project and her return to the BBC comedy fold. “I’m thrilled to be back in the heart of BBC comedy,” Johnston said. “Diane and Sarah have created a comedy that will resonate with lots of different audiences, for different reasons and I cannot wait to get started.”
