Mount Maunganui Landslide: Surf Community‍ Pays Respects, State of Emergency Extended

The surfing community gathered at Tay Street Beach in Mount ⁣Maunganui on Saturday for ⁤a paddleout⁣ to honor ‍the⁤ victims of the recent landslide in the⁤ area. The event, ⁢organized by Surfing New ‍Zealand and Bay Boardriders, provided an chance for surfers participating in the Billabong ⁢Grom Series and local residents to pay their respects.

Paddleout as a Sign⁣ of Respect

Surfing New Zealand chief executive Ben Kennings ‍explained the paddleout was a way to ⁣acknowledge the tragedy and show support for the affected community. He noted that ‍such events are a tradition within the surf community ⁢when loss⁢ occurs,and a way to recognize that “things are ⁤not normal.”

The Billabong ⁢Grom Series competition continued on Sunday,with subsequent events scheduled for Whangamatā and Piha in ⁤late February.

State of Emergency Continues

⁢ The State of emergency declared for Tauranga following the severe weather event and subsequent landslide has been extended until⁤ Wednesday. The Tauranga City Council stated the focus‍ remains on supporting the ⁣recovery operation and the families of ⁣the six individuals who tragically⁣ lost their lives in the landslide. ⁣A memorial has been established at the site of the landslide, and⁢ messages and mementos will be relocated to ⁤the he Maimai Aroha Community Care Center when the safety cordon⁤ is adjusted. Residents ‍and‍ business owners requiring access to⁣ the cordoned-off area⁤ must⁢ obtain a permit from the ‍Tauranga⁢ City Council.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has stood⁤ down ‍its specialist Urban Search and Rescue ‍team, having completed⁤ its initial search efforts. ‍ More data⁤ on the FENZ response is available from RNZ.
