Uganda Invests in Patriotism Training for Teachers, Aiming for National Transformation
Mbarara, Uganda - In a significant move to bolster national unity and socio-economic progress, the Ugandan government, spearheaded by President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni, recently concluded a comprehensive patriotism training program for over 1,372 secondary school teachers.The initiative, organized by the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC) under the State House, aims to cultivate a generation of responsible, loyal, and actively engaged citizens.
This isn’t simply a feel-good exercise; it’s a strategic investment in Uganda’s future, rooted in the understanding that a nation’s strength lies in the shared values and commitment of its people. As highlighted during the training, triumphant nations aren’t born overnight.They are built thru deliberate effort, preservation of resources, and a collective dedication to the common good.
Why Patriotism Training for Teachers?
The program’s core philosophy centers on the transformative power of sacrificial service and the critical role educators play in shaping young minds.Ms. Hellen Seku, Commissioner of the NSPC, explained that the training was a direct response to requests from teachers themselves, eager to become “change agents” within their schools and communities.
“We recognized the need to empower our teachers not just with academic knowledge,but with a deep understanding of their role in fostering national identity and purpose,” Seku stated. “Teachers are uniquely positioned to instill values of patriotism, discipline, and a commitment to national progress in the next generation.”
The curriculum was meticulously designed to equip teachers with the tools and knowledge to achieve this. Participants received instruction from high-level professionals and skilled military personnel,covering a broad range of topics including:
Patriotism & Core Values: Understanding the essence of national pride and civic responsibility.
Political Economy: Analyzing the economic landscape and the role of citizens in national wealth creation.
Social Systems & Transformation: Exploring the dynamics of societal change and individual contributions.
Financial Literacy: Empowering teachers with the skills to manage finances and promote economic independence.
Principles of the NRM: Providing context on the ruling National Resistance Movement’s ideology and policies. East African Integration & Pan-Africanism: fostering a broader regional and continental perspective.

A Model for National Development
The First lady,Janet Museveni,emphasized the importance of preserving and building upon existing resources,drawing parallels to nations that have successfully navigated challenges to achieve socio-economic growth. This resonates with a broader understanding of national development – it’s not about starting from scratch, but about strategically leveraging what you have and investing in the future.
Mr. Saul Rwampororo, Head Teacher of Ntare School and a program coordinator, noted the enthusiastic participation of teachers from seven districts and Mbarara City. the training was fully sponsored by the National Patriotism Secretariat, demonstrating the government’s commitment to this initiative.
Teachers Express Gratitude and Commitment
The trainees themselves expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity. Mr. Perez Assimwe, Chairman of the Trainees’ Memorandum Committee, lauded the comprehensive nature of the curriculum and its potential for long-term impact. He also extended thanks to President Museveni for his ongoing support of the teaching profession, specifically mentioning recent salary enhancements for science teachers and planned increases for arts teachers in the coming financial years.
“Your Excellency, we are indebted to you for enhancing science teachers’ salaries and the fruitful engagement you had with teachers of arts in regard to their salary enhancement come 2026- 2027 Financial Year. This is a real indicator that you really care for the bazzukulu,” Assimwe stated,using a term of endearment for “grandchildren” often used by the President to refer to the Ugandan people.
