NASA is planning an ambitious planetary mission to send a fleet of three identical rotorcraft to the Red Planet, with a scheduled launch aboard the NASA in late 2028. Unveiled in March, the SkyFall project will be managed by NASA’s NASA in Southern California, with the spacecraft releasing the helicopter trio near Mars in December 2028.
NASA Prepares Trio of SkyFall Helicopters for 2028 Mars Mission
The vehicles will follow in the footsteps of the agency’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, a technology demonstrator that flew 72 times over nearly three years, proving that powered, controlled flight is possible in the rarefied Martian atmosphere. While Ingenuity carried only a basic camera and served primarily as reconnaissance for the Perseverance rover, each of the three SkyFall helicopters will be equipped with four instruments. These will include basic weather equipment, a camera, and a ground-penetrating radar designed to hunt for subsurface frozen water.
Innovative Radar Technology and Flight Operations
To peer beneath the Martian surface down to shallow surveying depths under 16 feet (5 meters), SkyFall’s ground-penetrating radar will use an ultra-wide frequency range spanning 500 to 2,500 megahertz. Because the minimum clearance between the Martian surface and the base of a helicopter’s fuselage is only about 6 inches (15.2 centimeters), engineers developed a specialized fabric-based antenna design that was demonstrated in the In-Situ Instrument Laboratory at JPL in July 2026.
The flexible antenna measures about one and a half times longer than the helicopter’s legs. During landing, the antenna must bend out of the way and spring back into place for data collection when the aircraft takes off again. To withstand these operational pressures, the downsized Vivaldi antenna is sheathed in polyester and layers of Vectran, the same superstrong material used for the landing airbags of the Spirit and Opportunity rovers.
Spacecraft Propulsion and Mission Architecture
SkyFall is intended to fly on the first-ever spacecraft powered by nuclear fission, functioning as a pathfinder for larger nuclear propulsion projects. According to details shared by the space agency, the spacecraft will transport the fleet within a capsule that descends through the atmosphere on parachutes before deploying the three helicopters in midair.

AeroVironment of Arlington, Virginia — which previously worked with JPL to design and build Ingenuity — will co-design and co-manufacture the SkyFall helicopters. Meanwhile, NASA personnel are actively working to select a landing site that balances low risks with high scientific rewards, while also determining the exact number of flights each helicopter will undertake.
Scientific Scope and Broader Context
The mission’s goals include scouting unexplored terrain, detecting stores of subsurface ice, and monitoring atmospheric dust. Shallow subsurface ice is considered a critical resource for future astronauts, who will need to reach and process ice for water, oxygen, and fuel.
However, the ambitious proposal has also drawn scrutiny from some planetary scientists. The announcement caught many researchers unaware, leading to concerns from scientists who fear the endeavor could impact existing Red Planet research missions, such as the Mars Sample Return project, which remains in limbo due to budget cuts.
