The Growing Resistance within the National Guard: A Necessary Stand Against Political Misuse
The deployment of the National Guard to cities across the US under the Trump governance sparked considerable controversy. Beyond the legal questions surrounding these deployments, a deeper unease has been brewing within the Guard itself. While widespread refusal of orders hasn’t materialized – a risky move with severe consequences – a valiant few are beginning to draw a line, and their actions deserve our attention.
For a long time, the concern has been that National Guard members were being used as political props, deployed in mission-less roles to intimidate protestors and serve a political agenda. Many felt deeply uncomfortable with this role, but fear of repercussions kept dissent largely quiet. now, that silence is beginning to crack.
A Line in the Sand: Soldiers Questioning Orders
Two Illinois National Guard members, Joshua Blaha and Samantha Palecek, have publicly stated they would refuse orders to deploy to cities like Chicago under these circumstances. Their reasoning isn’t simply disagreement; it’s a matter of conscience and a chilling historical parallel.
Palecek’s stance is direct: “Absolutely. I would definitely say no. I’m not going to go against my community members, my family and my culture. I believe this is the time to be on the right side of history.” Blaha echoes this sentiment, drawing a stark comparison to Nazi Germany. He asks a crucial question: “There is a point where if you didn’t stand up to the Gestapo, are you just actively one of them now?”
This isn’t hyperbole. It’s a recognition of the potential for abuse of power and the moral responsibility to resist.
The Weight of Information in the Modern Age
What separates this moment from historical failures to resist tyranny? Information. Unlike citizens in 1930s and 40s Germany, you have unprecedented access to real-time information through social media, cell phone cameras, and the internet. Ignorance is no longer a viable excuse.
If a soldier participates in actions they know to be unjust or politically motivated, they are knowingly complicit. This is a heavy burden, but one that comes with the uniform.
Retaliation and the Cost of Courage
Speaking out isn’t without consequence. Both Blaha and Palecek have faced immediate repercussions for their public statements. Blaha’s security clearance was suspended after a viral video urging soldiers to disobey unlawful orders. Palecek has received death threats as denouncing the deployments and launching a political campaign.
Despite this, they remain resolute. As Blaha states, ”We were trained to stand up for what we believe in and stand up for the American people.” This commitment to duty extends beyond simply following orders; it means upholding the Constitution and protecting the rights of citizens.
What This Means for the Future of the National Guard
The bravery of individuals like Blaha and Palecek is regrettably rare within the military. There are indications that some within the Guard are embracing increasingly authoritarian tendencies. This is deeply concerning.
Being a member of the National Guard right now presents a unique moral challenge. You may be asked to confront your fellow Americans, perhaps in situations that violate your oath and your conscience.
Ultimately, we should expect our soldiers to act as patriots – to defend the Constitution, uphold the law, and protect the rights of all citizens. This requires more than blind obedience; it demands critical thinking, moral courage, and a willingness to stand up for what is right, even when it’s difficult.
