Netflix Using AI in 300 Titles: Is Streaming Quality Being Sacrificed for Cost?

Netflix is expanding its use of artificial intelligence across hundreds of titles to lower production expenses and accelerate timelines, according to recent statements from company leadership.

Co-Chief Executive Officer Ted Sarandos outlined the streaming giant’s strategy in a letter to shareholders ahead of an earnings call. Sarandos highlighted the company’s new docuseries, “The American Experiment,” which includes 17 minutes of AI-modified footage, featuring digitally generated crowds and battle scenes. According to Sarandos, the technology allowed producers to expand the visual scope of the project in ways that would not have been feasible under traditional production constraints.

The company reported that those specific segments were produced twice as fast and at half the cost of conventional methods. Sarandos defended the approach by noting that many modern productions would otherwise omit key visual elements entirely due to tight scheduling and budgetary limits.

Financial Pressures and Production Timelines

The integration of generative tools highlights broader economic pressures within the entertainment industry, where rising production expenses collide with demands for rapid content output. Streaming executives face constant pressure to maintain high volumes of original programming while managing ballooning budgets.

Industry analysts point out that digital manipulation tools offer a quick remedy for background gaps, empty sets, and logistical challenges associated with assembling large crowd extras.
