Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have been searching for almost 10 years for ideal compositions that can mimic physical activity.

And they succeeded: blends were designed to replicate the benefits of a workout, at least in rodent cells, to create a supplement.

Scientists hope to mimic the physical effects of exercise, especially the ability to improve metabolism and growth, as well as perfect muscle performance.

The team of researchers, led by professor of anesthesiology and principal scientist of the project Bahaa Elgendy, presented the results to the American Chemical Society.

“If you can exercise, you should go out there and do physical exercise. But there are so many cases in which a substitute is necessary,” we explain in a press release.

The results could lead to a new way to treat muscle atrophy and other medical problems, such as heart failure or neurodegenerative diseases.

If the drug could mimic the benefits of exercise, it could help compensate for muscle weakness that occurs naturally with age or in people affected by cancer.

Professor Elgendy said the ‘exercise pill’ could potentially counter the loss of muscle and fat caused by other weight loss drugs.

When testing on rodents, researchers found that the compound increased a fatigue-resistant muscle fiber, which improved the animals’ endurance during runs.

Tests still need to be done before the pill is available for humans. As part of the research process, the compound will be tested on other animals.
