Font is a five-piece band from Austin, Texas, which you immediately feel could become big. In 2022 Font already released the single “Sentence I” and that song seems like a twin of “Cousins” by Vampire Weekend. The same guitar touch, almost identical drum pattern and almost the same vocal line, but Font just makes a completely new, cool song with it. In 2023, the Texans released the single “It” free and that disc is completely different! “It” is a hard song that seeks and finds the middle ground between Goose and Front 242. Meanwhile, another year has passed and Font is releasing his new single “Hey Kekulé”. And the new throw has already become something completely different.

“Hey Kekulé” is about a German chemistry professor who had a chair at the University of Ghent. August Kekulé came up with the structural formula of benzene and somewhere he thought that it all looked like a snake biting its own tail. We do not feel the urge to understand this and would like to refer you to specialized websites. Finished. Thom Waddill just thought it sounded good and therefore simply composed a song about it. So we don’t have to look further into it. “Hey Kekulé” starts very nervously with a stressful synth sound and some heavy strokes on the piano. And then the drum part starts and you really feel the urge to swing your body and limbs around. It is very similar to the feeling you get when you hear “Rose Rouge” or “So Flute” by St Germain blaring from the speakers. Waddill sounds like a loose, young David Byrne with a nice melodic vocal line. After about two minutes the song descends into complete chaos and it seems as if all the instruments have to be destroyed. That consternation then suddenly stops and the band starts the very danceable chorus again. In short: Font already released two cool singles, but “Hey Kekulé” is simply fantastic in every possible way!
