Removing the doors on a Ford Bronco isn’t that difficult and is a great way to improve your off-road driving experience. In this case, driving on the highway at high speed is not so great, however. Based on a recently published door patent, Ford seems to be thinking of ways to improve the driving experience.
The patent was originally filed in October 2020, shortly after the Bronco debuted with sliding doors. The vehicle used for the patent images doesn’t look like a Bronco, but we can’t help but think that Ford is clearly hinting at its Jeep Wrangler rival.
In short, it’s a type of mesh panel that can be deployed automatically or at the driver’s command. Motors move these panels into place, and this doesn’t just apply to doors. The patent also talks about such removable roof panels.
The innovation could certainly provide a bit more safety for drivers and passengers who fear falling out of the car, but Ford is also hinting at a more important safety aspect related to the patent.
The innovative panels extend and retract using electric motors, but a pyrotechnic device can also be used to literally launch them into place upon impact. The sensors are supposed to make sure there are no hands, feet or fingers in the path of this mesh panel before activating them.
Will this feature appear in future cars? It’s still unknown, as many patents are filed just to protect ideas that never come to fruition. However, folding screens seem like a great idea for a new type of door.
