After learning this Monday of four deaths in Santa Cruz, which brings the number of victims from influenza to 12 in the Santa Cruz department alone, epidemiologist Virgilio Prieto highlighted that this disease has a vaccine and prevention treatment so there should be no fatalities. He added that a more aggressive campaign is necessary and that the population at risk go to the immunization points.

“No one would have died from a disease that has a vaccine, a treatment that has means of prevention and control,” Prieto told UNITEL.

He explained that people 40, 50 years old or older who are not vaccinated and have diabetes, hypertension or other underlying diseases are at high risk when they contract influenza.

“Unfortunately, the fatal cases are occurring primarily in people who have underlying illnesses, children and the elderly. These people have to be vaccinated compulsorily,” she noted.

The epidemiologist pointed out that he has spoken with the Government about the influenza situation and although he considers that fatality is at a very low level, it is necessary to undertake more appropriate activities such as “more aggressive social communication” so that people understand what can protect and that there is no reason for there to be fatalities.

“Even the vaccine will efficiently protect people with underlying diseases,” said Prieto.

The doctor asked not to self-medicate and explained that when a person with influenza starts treatment before 48 hours, it is very effective, even up to the fifth day.

“After the fifth day, the medicine does nothing, it can no longer cure,” he said.
