Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital Evaluates Awake Infant After Incident, No Apparent Injuries Reported

A 6-month-old baby girl was found abandoned in a stroller in Times Square late Tuesday night, according to the New York Police Department. Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a possible child abuse situation just after 11 p.m. Near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue. When they arrived, they discovered the child alone in a stroller. The baby was conscious and alert at the scene and was taken to Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital for evaluation.

The infant was last seen with a man who police believe is her father, who frequents the Times Square area. Investigators have been canvassing the area, showing people the baby’s photo and reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to track his movements leading up to the incident. As of the latest update, no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.

Under New York State’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act, a parent can legally abandon a newborn, up to 30 days old, at a safe location such as a hospital, firehouse or police station without facing prosecution. Still, since the child in this case is 6 months old, those protections would not apply. Authorities have emphasized that abandoning a child under the age of 14 is a felony in New York.

Parents of older babies who are unable to care for them should contact the Administration for Children’s Services to transfer custody or give up parental rights, officials noted. The case has drawn attention to the legal and social resources available for families in crisis, particularly in densely populated urban areas like Manhattan.

Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital, located at 30 7th Avenue in New York, NY 10011, provides a wide range of services including emergency medicine, cardiac care and orthopedics. The hospital confirmed it received the infant for evaluation but did not release further details due to privacy regulations. Medical staff reported the baby was stable upon arrival and undergoing standard assessment procedures.

The hospital is part of the Northwell Health system and operates a medical pavilion at 200 West 13th Street, offering outpatient services and specialist care. It maintains close coordination with nearby facilities including Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (MEETH), allowing for seamless patient transfers when needed.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable infants and the importance of public awareness about safe surrender options. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about the child’s identity or the man seen with her to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). All tips can be submitted anonymously.

As of now, the next official update will come from the NYPD following further investigation, including analysis of surveillance footage and potential identification of the individual involved. No timeline has been provided for when additional details may be released.
