REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BRASILIA – Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reiterated that Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. He had previously made similar statements and sparked criticism from Tel Aviv.

“What Israel is doing is not war, but genocide because they are killing women and children,” said Lula da Silva while attending an event in Rio de Janeiro, quoted by the Palestinian news agency, HE DIED, Saturday (24/2/2024). Since being declared persona non grata by Israel due to his previous statements, da Silva has not relaxed his criticism.

“This is genocide. Thousands of children are dead, thousands are missing. It’s not soldiers who are dying, but women and children in hospitals. If this isn’t genocide, I don’t know what is!” added da Silva.

He also highlighted the humanitarian crisis currently taking place in Gaza. “It is unacceptable for children and women in Gaza to sleep without food or even a glass of milk,” said da Silva, referring to the lack of humanitarian aid convoys that Israel allows to pass into Gaza.

Previously, Lula da Silva had described the ongoing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip as genocide. He also compared Israel’s actions with the atrocities committed by the Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler, during World War II. “What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not a war, it is a genocide,” Brazil’s Canal Gov channel quoted Lula da Silva as saying, February 18, 2024.

He believes that what the Palestinian people are facing and experiencing in Gaza has never happened before in history. “Actually, it already happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews (during World War II),” said da Silva.

“This is not a war between soldiers against soldiers. “This is a war between highly prepared soldiers and women and children,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Lula da Silva’s comments had crossed a red line. “The words of the Brazilian President are shameful and worrying. “This is about trivializing the Holocaust (the massacre of Jews in World War II) and trying to harm the Jewish people and Israel’s right to defend itself,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

Currently, Israel is still continuing to attack the Gaza Strip. So far more than 29,600 thousand Gazans have been killed since Israel launched its aggression on October 7 2023. Most of the victims were women and children.
