The NS deploys around 250 extra cleaners during carnival. Next weekend, the towns below the rivers will again be flooded with revelers from all over the country. All those visitors leave waste and dirt behind on trains and at stations.
More cleaners will be working both at night and during the day, during the timetable, but also afterwards. Furthermore, many stations have extra rubbish bins and toilets are open longer.
Last year, “more revelers than ever” traveled by train during carnival, the NS reported at the time. The cleaning company that the NS works with spoke of “a truly unprecedented number of people”.
“I have been working in train cleaning for 21 years and have never seen this during Carnival,” said foreman Saïd Mussati. Cleaners found a tree in a train toilet in Eindhoven. “And a heavy one too, so we had to lift it out with several people. That must have been very funny when it was put there, but it does create a lot of extra work for us.”
Measures
The municipality of Breda announced on Thursday that it was taking measures to prevent dangerous carnival crowds. Last year, unsafe situations arose when carnival goers could hardly move in some places due to the crowds.
That is why the city center will be designed differently this year: as a large event area. This new approach creates room for between 8,000 and 10,000 extra visitors.
