The Nice municipal election campaign continues to unfold with unexpected twists.Jean-Pierre Rivère, president of OGC Nice, who had joined Éric Ciotti’s list to become first deputy mayor, has withdrawn his candidacy due to potential legal issues but remains actively engaged in supporting the UDR-RN candidate, his campaign team announced on Monday.
The 68-year-old businessman, who made his fortune in real estate, will now co-chair the support committee for Éric Ciotti and will be appointed “special advisor” if Ciotti is elected mayor and/or president of the metropolitan area.
Since the announcement in December of Mr.Rivère’s return to led OGC Nice, which was experiencing a crisis, Christian Estrosi’s camp (Horizons party) has denounced a conflict of interest and announced on Friday that it would file a complaint with the prefect.
According to the electoral code, “municipal service providers” – private companies whose activity is linked to the municipality through regular services – are among the categories ineligible for municipal elections, unless thay have left their positions more than six months before the election.
Potential Conflict of Interest
Estrosi’s camp argues that the club is too closely linked to the city to avoid a conflict of interest and that Mr. Rivère, even after leaving OGC Nice in August after 14 years as president, disqualified himself by returning in December.
