Ohio Bobcats Name John Hauser as Head Football Coach
Ohio University has officially appointed John Hauser as its new head football coach, following a triumphant stint as interim leader. This decision comes after a period of transition for the Bobcats program, marked by both on-field success and off-field challenges.
Hauser recently guided Ohio to a 17-10 victory over UNLV in the ScooterS Coffee Frisco Bowl. he stepped into the interim role after the December firing of former coach Brian Smith.
Smith’s dismissal stemmed from allegations of “serious professional misconduct,” including claims of an inappropriate relationship with a student and public intoxication. The university acted swiftly to address these concerns and initiate a search for a permanent head coach.
A Rapid Rise within the program
John Hauser joined the Bobcats in 2022 as the safeties coach. His dedication and expertise quickly became apparent, leading to promotions.

Furthermore, they allowed onyl 17.46 points per game, placing them 11th nationally in scoring defense. This defensive strength provides a solid foundation for Hauser’s vision as head coach.
You’ll notice this appointment marks the third head coaching change for Ohio in as many seasons. Tim Albin departed after the 2024 season to take the helm at Charlotte. Smith’s subsequent promotion and eventual firing created the need for a stable, long-term solution.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Ohio will kick off the 2026 season with a challenging road matchup against Nebraska on September 5th. Hauser and his team are already preparing for this contest and the challenges ahead.
Athletic director Slade Larscheid emphasized Hauser’s integral role in the program’s recent success. ”Over the past four seasons, Ohio football has won 40 games, and John is a key piece in all that goes into our winning program.”
